ELIZABETH PRENTISS – MORE LOVE TO THEE by Sharon James hbk 241pp £15 Pub Banner of Truth
This book is the life story of Elizabeth Prentiss. She was a Pastor’s wife, mother and in her day, a well known writer.
Sharon James movingly tells her story, quoting regularly from Elizabeth’s own writings and also introducing us to the world in which she lived – nineteenth century America.
Elizabeth Prentiss had a life of much sadness. Her dearly loved father died when she was only nine years old and she and her family also suffered much illness. Perhaps her greatest sorrow was the death of her two little children. Yet, even in the midst of sorrow, she could say, “ God does not make a mistake”.
Her great desire was expressed in her hymn “ More Love to Thee”. She continually sought to live a life of holiness and nearness to Christ, and all her sorrows drew her nearer to her Saviour and also enabled her to sympathise with and encourage others passing through times of trouble.
As one who has been familiar with some of Elizabeth Prentiss’s writings from teenage years I eagerly awaited the publication of this book. I have not been disappointed. I would encourage you to read it, and may it cause you, like it has me, to seek “ More Love to Thee O Christ”.
